Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to help you get the information you need.
An ATF is a government-approved location where imported goods are inspected and processed to ensure they don’t pose a biosecurity risk. It’s a mandatory part of the import process for goods that could carry pests, soil, or organic contaminants.
A biosecurity consultant can assess your specific products and needs, connect you with trusted ATF providers, prepare your documentation, and coordinate logistics—saving you time, reducing errors, and ensuring smooth clearance through biosecurity checks.
Common biosecurity threats include pests, insects, plant and animal diseases, soil contaminants, and prohibited organic materials. MPI’s inspection processes are designed to detect and prevent these from entering NZ ecosystems.
Costs vary but generally include handling fees, inspection fees, storage charges, and treatment costs (fumigation, cleaning). Additional government fees, like biosecurity levies and MPI inspection charges, also apply. Using an existing ATF instead of establishing your own can significantly reduce costs.
Proper documentation—certificates of origin, supplier declarations, accurate packing lists—and working with experienced customsbrokers or biosecurity consultants can reduce inspection delays and ensure compliance.
Failure to meet biosecurity requirements can result in hefty fines, seizure of goods, or criminal charges. It can also cause costly delays, reputational damage, and disruptions to your supply chain.
