There is a Better Way to Source Products Than Scrolling Through Alibaba

You have probably already searched Alibaba, maybe Made-in-China.com too, or 1688.com if you know it. You have found products that look right. And then the doubt sets in: is this actually a factory? Are their certifications real? What happens if I pay and they disappear? These are the right questions. And they are exactly why a verified supplier matters more than a listing.

The Problem With Alibaba Nobody Warns You About

Alibaba isn't bad — it's just widely misunderstood. Most Kiwi importers treat it like a finished solution when it's really just a directory. And directories have problems:

Most "factories" on Alibaba are trading companies adding a margin on top of the real factory price
Alibaba's Gold Supplier status is a paid subscription — not an independent verification. We've found genuine factories that aren't Gold Suppliers, and we've found trading companies that are. The badge tells you they paid. It doesn't tell you they can deliver.
Sample quality rarely matches bulk production quality
You have no idea what factory conditions, certifications, or compliance standards look like- When something goes wrong, you're dealing with it alone — in English, across a 5-hour time difference

Whether you've found a supplier on Alibaba, Made-in-China.com, or 1688.com, the verification need is the same. We've helped dozens of Kiwi businesses move beyond Alibaba and into direct, verified factory relationships. The difference in price, quality, and reliability is significant.

Core Services

What We Do Instead

Factory
Identification

We identify the actual manufacturers behind the products you want — not the trading companies listing them on Alibaba. Direct factory relationships mean better prices, better communication, and no middleman margin eating into your margins.

Supplier
Verification

Every supplier we engage with goes through our verification process — legal registration, production capabilities, export licences, certifications, and reference checks. You know exactly who you're dealing with before you spend a dollar.

Beyond China — Vietnam Sourcing

Vietnam is the fastest-growing alternative to Chinese manufacturing for activewear, furniture, and homewares. But for most product categories — hardware, homewares, electronics accessories, glassware, promotional products — the right answer is still China. We source from both and will always tell you which is right for your product.

Ongoing Supplier Management

Found a great supplier? We help you manage the relationship over time — reorders, spec changes, quality monitoring, and price renegotiation. A good supplier relationship compounds in value every year.

Already Have an Alibaba Supplier?

You don't have to start from scratch to get the protection of verified sourcing. We verify existing suppliers and consolidate multiple small orders from different sources into a single import — photos, documentation, and DDP delivery. Send us the Alibaba listing or Made-in-China.com profile link and we'll tell you exactly what we can find out.

1688.com
Sourcing

Found a product on 1688.com? We can source directly from 1688 suppliers on your behalf — you don't need a Chinese entity to access China's domestic wholesale pricing. Send us the link.

How It Works

From Product Idea to Verified Supplier in 5 Steps

01

Tell Us What You Need

Product type, target price, volume, and any spec requirements. Already have an Alibaba link or a 1688.com URL? Send it through. The more detail, the better.

02

Factory Search

We search our existing network and conduct fresh outreach to identify the best-fit manufacturers in China or Vietnam.

03

Supplier Verification

Legal registration, capabilities, certifications, and references checked before we put anyone in front of you.

04

Sampling

We request samples, review them against your spec, and ship to you in NZ for sign-off before any bulk order commitment.

05

Order & Delivery

We manage the order, quality control, freight, and NZ Customs clearance end to end.

NZ Compliance

NZ Compliance Built In From the Start

Moving beyond Alibaba means taking on more direct responsibility for your supply chain — including compliance. We make that easy.

MPI Biosecurity

Certain materials require treatment or certification before entering New Zealand. We spec your products correctly to avoid holds at the border.

NZ Customs & Tariff Classification

Correct HS codes and documentation every time. Misclassification costs money and time.

CPTPP Preferential Rates

NZ has trade agreements with both China and Vietnam. We ensure your orders are structured to take advantage of reduced duty rates where applicable.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to help you get the information you need.

Is Alibaba completely useless?

No — and we'd never say that. Alibaba is a useful starting point for identifying product categories, getting a rough sense of pricing, and finding potential suppliers to investigate further. The problem is when businesses treat it as the end point rather than the beginning. We use it as one tool among many — not as a sourcing strategy.

How do you find suppliers if not through Alibaba?

A combination of our existing factory network built over years, trade fair contacts (Canton Fair, Vietnam Expo), industry databases, on-the-ground referrals in China and Vietnam, and targeted outreach to manufacturers in specific product categories. We also use import/export trade data to identify who's actually shipping what to where.

Is sourcing from Vietnam really cheaper than China?

For some product categories, yes — particularly labour-intensive manufacturing like garments, furniture, and footwear. For highly automated or technical products, China often still wins on price and capability. We'll give you an honest comparison for your specific product rather than a blanket recommendation.

What happens if the supplier you find doesn't work out?

We stand behind our process. If a verified supplier we've introduced falls short — on quality, lead time, or communication — we work with you to resolve it, including finding alternatives if needed. We don't just hand you a contact and disappear.

How much does it cost to use Epic Sourcing instead of Alibaba?

We charge a flat project fee — not a commission on your order. Our service fee covers the full sourcing engagement. Any order management on repeat purchases is calculated on the factory invoice value only — not on freight, duty, or landed cost. After your first order, you own the factory relationship. You can reorder directly or continue to use us — your choice, no lock-in. Book a discovery call for a clear estimate upfront.

Does your fee apply to every future order?

No. After your first production run, you own the factory relationship. You can reorder directly without using our services. If you'd prefer us to manage ongoing orders — QC, production monitoring, re-negotiation — we offer that on our standard hourly rate or order management fee. There's no lock-in either way.

I've already found a supplier on Alibaba. Can you just verify them rather than find a new one?

Absolutely. A significant portion of our clients come to us with a supplier they've already found. We verify existing suppliers — legal registration, production capability, certifications, export history — and give you a clear recommendation. Send us the Alibaba listing, Made-in-China.com profile, or 1688.com link and we'll take it from there.

Can you source from 1688.com on my behalf? I can't buy directly because it requires a Chinese entity.

Yes. 1688.com is China's domestic wholesale platform and it requires a Chinese business entity to purchase from directly. We access 1688 suppliers on your behalf. If you've found a product on 1688, send us the link — we'll source it or find a verified equivalent.

I have multiple small orders from different Alibaba suppliers — can you consolidate them into one shipment?

Yes. Order consolidation is a service we offer for clients purchasing from multiple suppliers. We coordinate collection, consolidate into a single shipment, manage the documentation, and clear it through NZ Customs as one import. This is significantly more cost-effective than shipping individual small orders.

What's the difference between Alibaba, Made-in-China.com, and 1688.com? Which one has better factories?

All three are supplier directories, not factories. Alibaba and Made-in-China.com are aimed at international buyers. 1688.com is China's domestic wholesale platform — often cheaper because it's not set up for export buyers, but harder to access without a Chinese entity. The factories behind the listings on all three platforms can be the same — what differs is price, accessibility, and the level of English-language support. We navigate all three on your behalf.

What's a typical minimum order quantity?

Most China factories start at 300–500 units for consumer goods. Vietnam apparel factories often work from 200 units. We negotiate MOQs downward for first-time orders — and we've helped clients start with runs as small as 100 units.
