In Eileen's words

I have always had a strong interest in supply chain management. I see the supply chain as the lifeblood of the global economy. It connects nations and people, and it is one of the cornerstones of how the world works.

I am drawn to the backend of a business, the part most people never see. I want to keep exploring that side of things and understand how successful brands are built.

Right now my focus is simple. Do the job well, deliver good results for my clients, and help them build their own brands.

How Eileen works with clients today

Every new client starts with a discovery call. Once that has happened, the project is handed to Eileen to onboard. She listens closely to what the client needs and passes that brief to the sourcing team so they can start looking for suppliers. When the team comes back, she is the one who explains what they found, answers the client's questions, and keeps the updates flowing in both directions. Where a project calls for it, she also travels with clients on sourcing tours.

A lot of the job is translation, and not only between Mandarin and English. What a client pictures in their head and what a factory needs on a specification sheet are rarely the same thing. Eileen names empathy as one of the things she is good at, which in this job means understanding what someone means when the words are not quite getting there.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Eileen Gao?

Eileen Gao is a Project Manager at Epic Sourcing, based in Auckland, New Zealand. She joined the company in 2025 and works in Mandarin and English, onboarding new clients, briefing the sourcing team, and managing projects through to delivery.

What is the standard project lead time?

It depends on how complex the project is. Buying an existing product with no customisation is the fastest. Customised projects take longer, because they have to allow for MOQ alignment, sampling, and changes along the way. MOQ means minimum order quantity, the smallest number of units a factory will agree to produce. Complex products may also need compliance testing and certification before they can be exported to New Zealand or Australia.

Why can an off the shelf product still take a long time?

Because the factory probably does not have it sitting in a warehouse. Buying an existing product does skip the slowest part, which is making the mould and producing samples, since the tooling already exists. But most manufacturers do not hold stock of every item, so your order still needs a fresh production run.

What does Eileen specialise in?

Project management and guiding sourcing tours. She also finds suppliers and translates client requirements into terms manufacturers can quote and build to.
