I grew up in a region surrounded by factories and saw first hand how hard it was for overseas buyers to make sourcing decisions without local information and reliable channels. Chemical raw materials and fertilisers stand out in particular. Prices move quickly, policies change often, and suppliers vary widely in quality. Overseas clients really need a local person who understands both the industry and both languages to help them judge what they are looking at and keep quality on track.
My first project at Epic Sourcing was a four category chemical raw material sourcing assignment for an Australian client, covering fertilisers, trace elements, sulphur and mineral commodities. I screened and verified more than 40 suppliers across several provinces and delivered tracking sheets and market briefs. Within two months the client had gone from an initial enquiry to negotiating long term procurement terms.
Export policies for chemical products can change without warning. I learned that the hard way while researching phosphate fertiliser suppliers. Because of China's phosphate export restrictions, half of the factories I first contacted did not actually hold export qualifications. Since then, verifying export qualifications is the first step in every fertiliser project I run.
The clients I support trust me, and I stay in touch with them. I share industry news, help with supplier background checks, market price analysis and quotation cost calculations. Right now I am focused on building a chemical products supplier network in central China and expanding into fertilisers and pesticides.
Outside work I enjoy hiking, fitness and photography, and taking in good natural scenery.
Mack starts by understanding what the client actually needs: product specifications, order volume, delivery schedule and budget. He then screens and compares suppliers, verifies their qualifications and export capability, and collects quotations, product specification sheets and certificates of analysis to build a clear comparison the client can decide from. A certificate of analysis, usually shortened to COA, is a document from the supplier confirming a batch has been tested and meets the stated specification.
I don't see myself as a middleman taking a cut. I see myself as the client's remote procurement department in China, making sure that every tonne the supplier promises actually goes into the container.
Once an order is placed he handles supplier communication, production follow-up, pre-shipment coordination and the logistics documentation.
