Specialisation: finding suppliers, quality control, contract negotiation, inventory management, and third-party logistics. Third-party logistics, often shortened to 3PL, means outsourcing warehousing and shipping to another company.
I was living in China and kept seeing the same thing. Small businesses, entrepreneurs and startups had good products and no way to get them made. Sourcing and supply chain problems were slowing their growth or stopping it completely. I had the supply chain background, the language skills, and the contacts from years of working with small and medium businesses in China. So I moved to Auckland in 2019 and started Epic Sourcing.
My first New Zealand client was in December 2019. I took the bus to Takapuna to meet him. I quoted $36 an hour. The cafes were closed, so we met in a pub.
Then COVID hit and we grew fast. Too fast, and in the wrong shape. Most of our revenue came from two large customers. That felt like success at the time. When the borders reopened and those customers changed how they bought, I had to make people redundant. I was a first-time founder and I had never done that before. It was a brutal lesson in what sustainable growth actually means, and it changed how I run the business.
Epic Sourcing has grown since then and gone global, with offices across China, Auckland, Sydney, the UK and Vietnam. But I would rather grow slower and keep the base wide than repeat that.
TK takes every first client call himself. From there he oversees every stage of the sourcing process and coordinates teams across New Zealand, Australia, and China. That means he is involved from the first conversation about what you want made, through finding and checking the factory, through quality control, and through getting the goods to you.
His view of the market is not the defensive one you might expect.
Chinese suppliers getting more confident dealing directly with overseas customers isn't a threat, it's a sign the market is growing.

That second line is the part that matters in practice. Sourcing goes wrong sometimes. A sample does not match. A shipment is held at the border. The job is being there when it does.
