What Are Freight Rates Doing Right Now?

Here's the current picture for China to NZ shipping as of May 2026:

  1. 20ft FCL (Full Container Load): $1,170–$1,430 — up ~30% since March
  2. 40ft FCL: $2,025–$2,475 — up ~15% since March
  3. LCL (Less than Container Load): $5/cbm — stable
  4. Air Freight: $4.50/kg — up 12%
  5. Express Air: $7.55/kg — up 12%

The big story here is FCL rates. A 30% jump in just two months is significant — we're talking thousands of extra dollars on a standard container. For a business importing 500 units of bamboo outdoor furniture or a full container of private-label activewear, that kind of increase can seriously squeeze your margins if you haven't planned for it.

LCL (Less than Container Load) is the notable exception — rates there have held steady at around $5 per cubic metre. That's actually a useful data point for importers with smaller volumes.

Why Is This Happening?

The primary driver is the ongoing Middle East conflict, which is disrupting key shipping lanes. When vessels have to reroute to avoid conflict zones, transit times get longer, fuel costs rise, and capacity on certain routes tightens — all of which push rates up.

This isn't the first time we've seen this play out. The Suez Canal disruptions of 2024 had a similar effect. The difference now is that rates had already been climbing coming out of the post-COVID normalisation period, so carriers have less buffer to absorb costs without passing them on.

There's also the Port of Tauranga factor closer to home — the terminal is currently operating at capacity, creating a bottleneck for containerised imports. If you're routing goods through Tauranga, factor in potential delays and storage costs on the NZ end of your shipment.

Sourcing Hack #1: Lock In Your Rates Early — Freight rates are volatile right now, so the worst thing you can do is wait until the last minute to book. Contact your freight forwarder 6–8 weeks before your planned ship date and ask about rate lock-in options. Many forwarders will hold a rate for 2–4 weeks if you can commit to the booking. A small fee for rate certainty is almost always worth it when the market is moving like this.

How Does This Affect Different Types of Importers?

The impact varies quite a bit depending on your business model and order size.

If you're importing full containers regularly — say, a retailer bringing in seasonal stock of outdoor furniture, kitchenware, or electronics accessories — the 30% FCL increase hits hardest. A $1,000 freight cost jump on a 20ft container needs to come from somewhere: either you absorb it, pass it on to customers, or find efficiencies elsewhere.

If you're a smaller brand or ecommerce operator importing 2–5 cubic metres at a time — think custom leather bags, skincare products, or branded wellness gear — LCL is looking pretty attractive right now. Stable at $5/cbm means your landed costs haven't moved on the freight side.

Smart Strategies to Manage Rising Freight Costs

  1. Consolidate your orders. Fewer, larger shipments are almost always more cost-effective than frequent small ones when FCL rates are elevated.
  2. Switch to LCL for smaller volumes. If you're importing less than 15 cubic metres, LCL at the current stable rate ($5/cbm) will likely beat FCL on a cost-per-unit basis.
  3. Review your product mix. High-volume, low-margin products feel freight increases most acutely.
  4. Get multiple quotes. Rates can vary by 15–20% between forwarders for the same route.
  5. Consider the NZ-China FTA advantage. NZ importers currently pay 0% duty on most manufactured goods from China while US importers pay ~145% on selected categories.

Sourcing Hack #2: Use the LCL Window Strategically — If your next order is under 15cbm, seriously consider LCL right now. While FCL rates are up 30%, LCL has barely moved. For a 10cbm shipment of custom promotional products or small-batch skincare, you could save $800–$1,500 compared to a shared container arrangement. Ask your freight forwarder to quote both options side by side.

What About Port of Tauranga Congestion?

Worth a special mention for Bay of Plenty and Waikato-based importers: Tauranga's terminal is currently at capacity. This is primarily causing delays for kiwifruit exports, but it creates a knock-on effect for inbound container handling. If you're routing imports through Tauranga, build in an extra 3–5 days on your timeline.

Looking Ahead: Will Rates Come Down?

Honestly, it's hard to say with certainty. Freight markets are notoriously difficult to predict, and the Middle East situation doesn't have a clear resolution timeline. The best thing you can do is build freight volatility into your cost modelling for the next 6–12 months — don't base your landed cost calculations on where rates were 6 months ago. Budget for current rates plus a 10% buffer, and review quarterly.
