How to Import Outdoor Furniture from China to New Zealand (The Complete Guide)
There is a reason outdoor furniture is one of the fastest-growing import categories for NZ businesses right now. A decent outdoor dining set from a NZ retailer might retail for $1,500-$3,000. The same quality set sourced directly from a Foshan manufacturer? You might land it in Auckland for $400-$700 including freight. That is the kind of margin opportunity that gets importers' attention.
But outdoor furniture importing is not quite as simple as finding a factory on Alibaba and ordering a container. There are supplier quality traps, material specification issues, freight considerations, and NZ customs requirements to navigate. We have helped multiple Kiwi businesses import outdoor furniture successfully. Here is what you need to know.
Why Foshan Is the Centre of the Furniture Universe
If you are importing outdoor furniture, you will almost certainly end up sourcing from Foshan in Guangdong Province. Foshan is arguably the world's largest furniture manufacturing cluster, with thousands of factories competing for business. What makes Foshan special for outdoor furniture:
- Aluminium frame furniture (powder-coated, rust-resistant) - Foshan dominates this globally
- Wicker and rattan weave furniture (synthetic PE rattan over aluminium frames)
- Teak and hardwood outdoor furniture
- Modular sofa sets, dining sets, sunloungers, and commercial-grade furniture
Sourcing Hack #1: The Aluminium vs Steel Frame Test Always clarify whether the frame is aluminium or steel. Aluminium frames are rust-proof and ideal for NZ coastal environments. Steel frames, even with powder coating, will eventually rust in our salty air. Reputable factories will tell you upfront; always ask for material certification for the frame metal.
Finding the Right Supplier Beyond Alibaba
The product photography on Alibaba is outstanding. Every factory looks like it produces gorgeous furniture. You cannot judge quality from photos. A more reliable sourcing approach:
- Search for factories, not trading companies: look for manufacturer listings, not trading company listings
- Check export history: factories exporting to Australia, UK, or US are usually more reliable
- Request a factory visit or third-party verification before committing
- Always sample before committing, and sample the exact specification you intend to sell
Material Specifications: Getting This Right
Specify precisely when communicating with suppliers. For aluminium frames: 6063-T5 grade, minimum 1.5mm wall thickness (commercial grade 2.0mm+), powder coating 60-80 microns minimum. For synthetic rattan: PE polyethylene rattan not PVC, round-weave over aluminium for durability, with UV resistance specifications. For cushions: olefin or solution-dyed acrylic fabric, quick-dry foam filling, removable zip covers.
Sourcing Hack #2: The Cushion Drop Test Place the cushion in a bucket of water for 30 minutes, squeeze it out, and check how long it takes to dry. If it is still damp after 24 hours, the foam is wrong for outdoor use. Good outdoor cushions should dry within a few hours. This simple test can save you hundreds of customer service complaints.
Freight, Shipping, and Lead Times Right Now
Sea freight from China to Auckland as of August 2026:
- 20ft container: $2,250-$2,750
- 40ft container: $4,455-$5,445
- These rates are up 36-38% from June 2026 into Oceania peak shipping season
Transit time is 20-23 days. Production lead time is typically 30-45 days after deposit. Total time from order to Auckland warehouse: 8-12 weeks. A 40ft container typically holds 15-20 complete 6-seater dining sets or 30-40 nested sunloungers.
NZ Customs and Import Requirements
Good news: New Zealand has no import tariff on most furniture from China under the NZ-China FTA. Most outdoor furniture categories (HS codes 9401, 9403) attract 0% duty. You will need: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, timber declaration if solid wood components are present (MPI requirement), and ISPM 15 heat-treated wooden packaging.
The Role of a Sourcing Agent in Furniture Importing
A sourcing agent reduces the risk of expensive first-import lessons by pre-screening factories, managing the RFQ process across multiple suppliers, coordinating factory visits and quality inspections, reviewing pre-shipment samples, and managing communication during production when factories can go quiet during Chinese holidays.
