Virtual vs Physical: Is ExpoGo or the Canton Fair Better?
Last updated: 5 October 2026
ExpoGo or the Canton Fair? If you want to see suppliers without getting on a plane, a virtual ExpoGo visit is the easier first step. If you need to touch products, meet many suppliers in a few days, or plan a large order, going to the Canton Fair in person is the better choice.
Many Kiwi buyers use both. They take a virtual look first, then travel when the order is bigger.
What is the difference between ExpoGo and the Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair is the event. ExpoGo is one way to take part with help from the Epic Sourcing team.
- The Canton Fair: the 140th Canton Fair runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. It is the fair's 70th-anniversary year.
- Three phases: Phase 1 is 15 to 19 October, Phase 2 is 23 to 27 October, and Phase 3 is 31 October to 4 November. Each phase covers different product groups.
- ExpoGo: Epic Sourcing NZ's virtual expo tour. You join on Zoom while our bilingual team walks the expo floor, talks to suppliers on live video, and shows you the booths on your wishlist.
- The fair's own online tools: the official Canton Fair website and app let buyers search exhibitors and products, send messages, and book meetings. You do this on your own, without a guide.

When is a virtual ExpoGo visit the better choice?
A virtual visit suits buyers who want to look before they commit. It cuts out flights, hotels, and days away from your business.
- A first look at a category: see what suppliers show before you plan a trip.
- Short on time: join from your desk for the booths that matter to you.
- Trend scouting: spot new products and styles without a week away.
- A small test order: ask for samples first, then decide if a trip is worth it.
- Language help on the call: our bilingual team asks your questions and explains the answers.
See how it works on our ExpoGo virtual expo tours page. You pick an expo, send your wishlist, join the live tour, and we help with samples and next steps.
When is going to the Canton Fair in person better?
Some things are hard to judge through a screen. Being there helps when the order is big or the product is hard to describe.
- You need to touch and test: fabric, finish, weight, and build are easier to check by hand.
- You want many meetings fast: you can walk from booth to booth and compare suppliers side by side.
- The order is large: more money at stake means more reason to meet the people behind it.
- You want a long-term supplier: a face-to-face meeting can make later calls and emails easier.
- You can add factory visits: a trip to Guangzhou can include a visit to a short list of factories.
If you decide to go, our Canton Fair tours cover visa guidance, a planned itinerary, WeChat setup, and a bilingual specialist by your side. Before you fly, work through our Canton Fair checklist for buyers.
How do ExpoGo and an in-person visit compare?
Use this quick list to see which option fits your next step.
- Cost and time: a virtual visit has no travel. An in-person trip needs flights, a hotel, and time away.
- Product checks: on screen you see the product. In person you can hold it.
- Number of suppliers: online, you focus on a short list. In person, you can cover more booths in a day.
- Language support: with ExpoGo, our bilingual team joins you. On your own, you handle every chat yourself.
- Samples and follow-up: both options can lead to samples. What matters is a clear plan for what happens after the fair.

How do you get the most from either option?
The steps are almost the same online or in person. The work you do before the fair matters most.
- Pick your phase: choose the phase that shows your product group.
- Write a wishlist: list the products, target price, and order size you have in mind.
- Register early: overseas buyers going in person pre-register and apply for a buyer badge on the fair's official Buyer Service System.
- Prepare your questions: ask about minimum order size, sample cost, and the time from sample to shipping.
- Ask for samples: do not place a full order from a booth or a video call alone.
- Check before you pay: run every supplier through the manufacturer red flags checklist.

FAQs
Is ExpoGo the same as the Canton Fair's online platform?
No. The official online platform is run by the fair, and you use it on your own. ExpoGo is an Epic Sourcing service where our team guides you and helps you talk to suppliers.
Can I attend the Canton Fair from New Zealand without flying?
Yes. With ExpoGo you join a live tour on Zoom from your office. Our team walks the floor, talks to suppliers for you, and helps with samples after the tour.
When is the Autumn 2026 Canton Fair?
The 140th Canton Fair runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026 in Guangzhou. Phase 1 is 15 to 19 October, Phase 2 is 23 to 27 October, and Phase 3 is 31 October to 4 November.
Which phase should I choose?
Pick the phase that shows your product group. Our Canton Fair Autumn 2026 phase guide explains which products sit in each phase.
Can I get samples after a virtual visit?
Yes. If you find a product you like, our team can help arrange samples sent to you. Check the samples before you place a full order.
Do I still need to check a supplier I met at the fair?
Yes. A smart booth does not prove a company owns a factory. Check the business licence, ask for a live factory video, and use safe payment terms.
