Sea freight for a 20-foot container (20GP) is sitting at USD $1,170–$1,430 — up 30% compared to March 2026. A 40-foot container (40GP) is running USD $2,025–$2,475, up 15% over the same period. Air freight has also crept up 12%, sitting around USD $4.50/kg.

A few factors are driving the current spike:

1. Trade War Overspill. Global supply chain ripple effects from ongoing US-China trade tensions are pushing more cargo onto alternative routes and creating bottlenecks at key ports.
2. Pre-Winter Restocking Rush. As southern hemisphere winter approaches, NZ businesses are rushing to restock inventory — demand for container space is high.
3. Capacity Tightness. Shipping capacity that was reallocated during earlier disruptions hasn't fully returned to the China-NZ corridor.
4. Fuel & Surcharge Increases. Fuel costs and port surcharges continue to add to base freight rates across the board.

The good news? LCL (less than container load) rates have remained stable at around USD $5/cbm, which is a useful option if you're not moving full containers yet.

Sourcing Hack #1: Lock In Your Rate Early — Don't leave your freight booking to the last minute. Contact your freight forwarder at least 4–6 weeks before your cargo is ready to ship. Early bookings typically secure better rates and guaranteed space, especially during peak periods.

Sea vs Air vs Express — Which Mode Makes Sense Right Now?

1. Sea Freight. Still the most cost-effective for larger volumes despite the rate increase. Best for non-urgent, heavier goods like furniture, gym equipment, or large apparel orders. Transit time is 20–23 days.
2. LCL. Brilliant if you're testing a new product or don't have the volume for a full container yet. At USD $5/cbm and 25–30 day transit, it remains the budget-friendly flex option.
3. Air Freight (USD $4.50/kg). Worth it for high-value, low-weight products where speed matters — think electronics accessories, fashion samples, or emergency restocks. 7–9 day transit.
4. Express (USD $7.55/kg). For genuinely urgent, small volume shipments only. 3–5 days door to door, but at a premium that adds up fast.

How to Reduce the Impact on Your Landed Costs

1. Consolidate Your Orders. Consolidating orders to fill containers more efficiently reduces per-unit freight costs.
2. Negotiate Contract Rates. For ongoing importers, some freight forwarders will offer contract rates for a fixed number of bookings.
3. Increase Your Lead Time Buffer. Ordering 30–45 days earlier gives you more flexibility on freight mode and booking windows.
4. Consider LCL More Seriously. For smaller importers with flexible timing, LCL remains stable and is an underutilised option.
